Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Bilgin, in collaboration with Idlir Frangu, has published a research article titled "Comparative Assessment of Seismic Analysis Procedures: Eurocode 8 vs. KTP.N2-89" in the journal Research & Design (December 2024).

This study evaluates seismic design practices for reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in Albania, comparing the European seismic code (Eurocode 8) with the Albanian seismic code (KTP.N2-89). It highlights key differences in soil classification, seismic concepts, and base shear demands.

Key findings include:

  • Eurocode 8: Incorporates detailed soil classification using shear wave velocity (VS-30), near- and far-field seismic effects, and site-specific factors. This leads to higher base shear demands, particularly for soft soils, and reflects a more conservative approach.
  • KTP.N2-89: Simpler system with limited guidelines for soil effects and earthquake characteristics, often resulting in lower base shear values except for very soft soils.

The research underscores the need for updating Albania’s seismic code to align with modern practices like Eurocode 8, improving structural resilience and safety in earthquake-prone regions.
