Mastering Academic Journal Publication: A Series of Expert Sessions at EPOKA University

The Continuous Education Center at EPOKA University, in collaboration with Lectito Journals, successfully organized a six-session training series titled Mastering Academic Journal Publication, from January 30 to June 26, 2024. This initiative aimed to enhance the academic publishing skills of faculty members and students, providing them with valuable insights from renowned experts in the field.

 

A Comprehensive Learning Experience

 

The series commenced on January 30, 2024, with a session by Professor Simon Stewart from the University of Portsmouth, UK. Conducted online, this session provided participants with a journal editor’s perspective on publishing in international journals, covering key aspects such as manuscript preparation, common pitfalls, and strategies for improving publication success. The session attracted 82 attendees from various departments, reflecting a strong interest in the topic.

 

Building on this foundation, Professor Stewart returned on March 6, 2024, for an on-campus session at EPOKA University. He guided participants on producing journal articles from collaborative research projects, highlighting teamwork and coordination as essential elements in the publication process. This session, engaged attendees and provided them with practical strategies for managing joint research efforts effectively.

 

Key Insights from Leading Experts

 

The series progressed with a focus on manuscript structuring and writing techniques. Professor David Inglis from the University of Helsinki, Finland, led a session on March 25, 2024, discussing the importance of organizing a manuscript effectively. This online session emphasized coherence, clarity, and adherence to journal guidelines.

 

A crucial aspect of academic publishing—writing in English—was addressed by Dr. Marianela Barrios Aquino from the University of Portsmouth, UK, on April 29, 2024. Her session targeted non-native English speakers, offering practical advice on linguistic precision and cultural nuances in academic writing. The session proved highly relevant and beneficial for those facing language barriers.

 

Refining Writing and Choosing the Right Journal

 

The final two sessions focused on refining writing techniques and strategic journal selection. On June 25, 2024, Professor Ben Highmore from the University of Sussex, UK, delivered an insightful session on wording and conceptualization, helping participants enhance their writing clarity and impact. 

 

Concluding the series on June 26, 2024, Professor Barry Smart from the University of Portsmouth, UK, explored the process of identifying the right journal for publication and the advantages of membership in international academic organizations. This session provided a roadmap for long-term success in academic publishing.
