On Tuesday, 25 March 2025, EPOKA University had the privilege of hosting a masterclass titled Opera Appreciation, led by Andrea Ridilla, a distinguished Professor of Music at Miami University and an acclaimed oboist. The session offered a captivating exploration of opera, its origins, evolution, and profound impact on culture and society.

Professor Ridilla guided attendees through the rich history of opera, beginning with its roots in ancient Greece and Rome. Originally, opera was intended to be more dramatic than musical, with its roots deeply connected to theatrical storytelling. However, in Italy, opera evolved into a more musical form, often incorporated into wedding celebrations and grand events, marking the beginning of opera as we know it today.

The discussion then turned to the first opera ever written, L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi, which premiered in 1607. This opera is often considered the foundation of the genre. Professor Ridilla explained how the first opera performances were commissioned by wealthy families, including the powerful Medici family, who played a crucial role in the development of opera by funding performances that were not only entertaining but also served as a medium for political and cultural expression.

Opera, during its early years, was one of the few forms of entertainment available, making it an influential cultural force. In fact, as Ridilla pointed out, opera was as powerful in shaping public opinion and spreading ideas as modern media is today. She cited the example of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, whose works were so impactful that they inspired nationalistic sentiments, ultimately contributing to Italy's unification in 1861.

The "God of Opera," Orpheus, and the "Father of Opera," Monteverdi, were also mentioned as central figures in the genre’s creation and evolution. As Professor Ridilla continued, she highlighted other prominent composers such as Rossini, Vivaldi, Verdi, Mozart, and Beethoven, whose operatic masterpieces helped shape opera’s golden age. Additionally, Austria's pivotal role in the development of opera was noted, with the city of Vienna becoming a major hub for opera and classical music.

In this engaging session, Professor Ridilla also discussed the ways in which opera serves as a bridge between cultures, connecting people through shared emotions and universal themes. The masterclass was a true celebration of opera as an enduring art form that continues to resonate with audiences around the world.

This event was an excellent opportunity for students, faculty, and music enthusiasts to deepen their understanding of opera’s historical significance, as well as to appreciate its ongoing influence in today’s world of classical music.
