Meet the Minds Behind the Simulation: EPOKA Student Mentors Reflect on Their Journey
While much of the attention at the “Step Into the Shoes of EU Decision Makers” simulation, held on April 9–10, 2025, was directed at the high school participants, an equally vital group worked behind the scenes to ensure the event’s success—student mentors from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at EPOKA University.
These mentors were the heart of the simulation. From preparing briefing materials to facilitating debates and providing individual support, their presence helped create a vibrant, educational, and professional environment where participants could fully immerse themselves in the workings of the European Union.
For the student mentors, the experience went far beyond offering assistance. It was a chance to step into leadership roles, apply academic knowledge to real-life scenarios, and sharpen their communication, critical thinking, and diplomatic skills.
“At times, passion turned things chaotic, but navigating that chaos and reaching decisive conclusions was incredibly rewarding.” — Heljod Hebaj
“This simulation reaffirmed once again that I made the right choice two years ago when choosing to study Political Science and International Relations at EPOKA. Everything felt so real today—I was putting into practice what I’ve been learning in theory these four semesters.” — Kristina Kraba
“The EU simulation was a real-life experience that taught me a lot about guiding others and staying sharp.” — Belkisa Isufi
Mentoring came with its own set of challenges. The mentors had to explain intricate EU structures in accessible ways, moderate debates, and manage the excitement and pressure felt by high school students. These responsibilities nurtured their ability to lead and adapt under pressure.
“It was a fun and very challenging experience to give strong and relevant arguments aligning with the interests of our assigned EU member states. We had to organize our thoughts, sacrifice, and cooperate to reach a beneficial agreement that would satisfy both parties.” — Vanesa Buli
“I was a little nervous when the Q&A session started, as I was given the role of High Commissioner, but fortunately, I completed my task successfully and answered all the questions in a diplomatic manner—I gave an answer without giving an answer :). I’m happy that all my arguments won! It was a great experience and I enjoyed it to the maximum! Thank you for making it possible!” — Xhoana Bashuri
One of the most meaningful elements of the simulation was the bond formed between mentors and participants. High school students, many of whom were engaging in EU policymaking for the first time, found comfort and inspiration in the guidance of university mentors who had once been in their position.
“It was a true experience of critical thinking, debating, and organization of the session. I really enjoyed the different worldviews of the students.” — Marina Qepa
“I want to start by saying that these two days have been a wonderful experience for me. They allowed me to not only meet new inspiring individuals, enjoy the process, and have a great time, but also gain new information. It was great, and I’d be very excited to join future events like these. It has been a delight working with all of you!” — Artemis Koci
Through their contributions, the student mentors of EPOKA University not only elevated the simulation experience but also deepened their own academic and personal development. Their commitment, insight, and leadership are a testament to the quality of education and civic engagement fostered at EPOKA University.
