May 26, 2025, EPOKA University — The Department of Political Science and International Relations at EPOKA University, in collaboration with the Students Clubs Office and with the support of the EPOKA University Library, organized a book promotion and lecture featuring Dr. Maher Hamoud, a lecturer in political economy at the University of Leuven.
The event was coordinated by lecturer Naida Ertekin and Students Clubs representative Bilbil Beqiri, and centered on Dr. Hamoud’s latest book, The Political Economy of Egyptian Media (Bloomsbury, 2023), which includes a foreword by Charles Tripp (SOAS, University of London).
During the session, Dr. Hamoud discussed key themes from his research, including the relationship between media ownership, state power, and political transformation in Egypt. He also shared insights into how similar patterns of media control and influence are present in other parts of the Arab region.
Participants could ask questions and engage in discussion following the lecture. Dr. Hamoud also spoke about his academic and professional background, including his role as former editor-in-chief of Daily News Egypt and his current research in development politics and trade in the Global South.
The book has been described by academics as a valuable addition to the fields of media studies and political economy, offering timely perspectives on the structure and function of media within authoritarian systems.
EPOKA University thanks Dr. Hamoud for sharing his work and to all contributors who helped make the event possible.
