The Department of Computer Engineering organized a two-day Fundamentals of Deep Learning workshop, delivered by Affan Muhammad, NVIDIA-certified instructor and Lecturer at the University of Twente, Netherlands. The workshop was attended by third-year students from all Computer Engineering programs.
During the training, students were introduced to the foundations of artificial intelligence and the deep learning revolution, exploring how neural networks learn from data and how deep learning differs from traditional programming and classical machine learning. The sessions covered core concepts such as model training, loss functions, optimization techniques, and overfitting, supported by hands-on exercises in computer vision.
A significant part of the workshop focused on convolutional neural networks, data augmentation techniques, and model deployment strategies, enabling students to understand how modern vision systems achieve high accuracy and robustness. Participants also learned how to use pre-trained models and apply transfer learning to efficiently solve new problems.
The workshop concluded with an introduction to advanced deep learning architectures, including natural language processing concepts, attention mechanisms, and transformer-based models, providing students with a broader perspective on current trends and future directions in artificial intelligence.
Upon successful completion of the workshop and the required skills-based assessment, participating students were awarded an official NVIDIA Certificate of Competency in Fundamentals of Deep Learning, recognizing their practical skills and subject-matter competence in modern deep learning techniques.
