“Perspectives on Negotiations with the EU”, guest speaker Ambassador Zef Mazi, Chief Negotiator for the accession of the Republic of Albania to the EU

On February 10, 2022, the Center for European Studies (CES) at EPOKA University welcomed the Ambassador Zef Mazi, Chief Negotiator for the accession of the Republic of Albania to the EU, in an open forum to discuss on “Perspectives on Negotiations with the EU”. The forum is part of the series of Open Lectures on ‘Regional Integration of Western Balkans’ organized by CES.

Ambassador Zef Mazi is a well-accomplished personality with a very rich career in diplomacy and foreign affairs. He has served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Albania to different countries like Austria and United Kingdom, and as the Representative of the Republic of Albania to numerous international organizations. Ambassador Mazi has also served as Special Assistant to the Director-General for Strategy at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ambassador Mazi offered important insights on the current state of the EU accession process of Albania highlighting firstly the regional and international context in which this process is taking place. He started the discussion with an explanation of the distribution of power in the current international system, to continue with the dynamics in the Western Balkans region and focusing specifically on Albania and its EU accession process. Ambassador Mazi elaborated on the history of relations between Albania and the EU, and provided a detailed analysis of the developments, challenges, and prospects in the EU accession process of Albania. The participants had the opportunity to address numerous questions to the guest and to receive his suggestions on how youths, professionals, and experts might contribute to the integration process.
