The Banking and Finance Department at Epoka University successfully organized an open lecture as part of the Global Money Week 2026 activities, focusing on the theme “Smart Money Talks: Money in the Digital World” / The session brought together students, academics, and industry professionals to explore the rapid transformation of the financial sector in the digital era.
The lecture was delivered by Ms. Elona Labinoti, Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Payments, Cards, Digitalization, and Alternative Channels Committee at the Albanian Association of Banks. Drawing from her extensive industry experience, she provided valuable insights into the ongoing evolution of banking systems and financial services.
A central focus of the lecture was the digital transformation of banking, highlighting how technological advancements have reshaped payment systems from traditional card technologies such as EMV and NFC to emerging solutions involving artificial intelligence, biometrics, and digital assistants. Participants gained a deeper understanding of how innovation is driving efficiency, security, and accessibility in financial services.
The discussion also addressed key developments in the Albanian financial ecosystem, including the implementation of the new law on basic payment accounts, which aims to enhance financial inclusion by ensuring access to essential banking services for all citizens. In addition, attention was given to advancements in national and international payment systems, such as the introduction of AIPS Euro and SEPA transfers, which are expected to improve transaction efficiency and reduce costs.
Another important topic covered was open banking, emphasizing transparency, customer control, and secure data sharing. The speaker explained how these developments are empowering customers while fostering innovation and competition within the banking sector.
Looking ahead, the lecture explored future trends that are set to redefine finance, including the rise of digital currencies, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, virtual reality, and AI-driven financial services.
